It owns and operates four gas distribution networks in the Great Britain; gas distribution networks in New York, New York City, Long Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island; and electricity distribution networks in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. In addition, the company operates and manages electricity transmission and distribution network in Long Island on behalf of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA); and generates electricity through oil and gas in Long Island, as well as offers metering services, property management, electricity interconnectors, and LNG importation services. It serves approximately 19 million residential and commercial consumers. The company operates approximately 7,600 kilometers of high pressure gas transmission pipelines, 7,200 kilometers of overhead electricity transmission lines, 690 kilometers of underground cable, and 132,000 kilometers of gas distribution pipelines in the United Kingdom; and approximately 13,800 kilometers electricity transmission and sub-transmission lines, 116,700 circuit kilometers of electric distribution lines, and 58,000 kilometers of gas distribution pipelines in the United States. It also owns 57 electricity generation units on Long Island that provide approximately 4.1 GW of power under contract to LIPA. The company was formerly known as National Grid Transco plc and changed its name to National Grid plc in July 2005. National Grid plc was founded in 1990 and is based in London, the United Kingdom.
